About
I’m Arnav Gupta — an engineer and writer. This is my corner of the web: a place for essays, technical writing, and projects I care enough about to document.

Where I’ve worked
December 2024 – Present
Engineering Manager at Meta
- I help decide where millions of servers physically go. Tetris, but the blocks are datacenters.
- Turns out all that AI needs a gigawatt of compute to live somewhere. I'm part of the somewhere.
March 2023 – December 2024
Director of Engineering at Viacom18
- We took JioCinema from 0 to 400M users in six months. My sleep schedule did not survive.
- Ran two teams and ~35 engineers building the fun stuff — game stats, 360 views, VR, and stickers you could buy mid-match.
- Grew from 400M to 620M users between two IPL seasons and somehow cut crashes by 80% doing it.
- Snuck Kotlin Multiplatform into iOS and Web because writing the same code twice is a sin.
April 2021 – March 2023
Product & Strategy at Scaler
- Hung out in the CEO's office during the wild 10x-growth years.
- Built a team from nothing and shipped the Scaler app.
- Bought three companies, launched a learning program, and started a podcast where I got to grill top CTOs.
March 2020 – April 2021
Lead Engineer at Target
- Reshaped the India mobile team from "we support things" into "we own things."
- Built our own chat-support and FAQ platforms mostly to stop paying Salesforce.
- Dragged the login flow into the OAuth2 era.
March 2019 – March 2020
Engineering Lead at Zomato
- Made the Android app smaller and faster, and cut our build times by 95% so nobody had time for coffee anymore.
- Handled moving Uber Eats users over after the acquisition.
- Built and open-sourced Sushi, Zomato's design library.
June 2016 – March 2019
Co-Founder & CTO at Coding Blocks
- Started a company, bootstrapped it to ~$1.9M ARR, and actually made money doing it.
- Built the SSO, an online IDE, and a code judge that ran everyone's questionable code in Docker.
- Taught a lot of people Android and Node, and wrote the courses too.
